What Is BMR?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the minimum amount of energy your body requires to function at rest. This includes breathing, circulating blood, controlling body temperature, cell growth, brain and nerve function, and contraction of muscles. Your BMR accounts for about 60% to 75% of the total calories you burn each day.
The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is currently considered the most accurate formula for estimating BMR in modern populations. It was developed in 1990 and has been validated as more reliable than the older Harris-Benedict formula.
