Why Is Waist-to-Hip Ratio Important?
The Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) is a quick measure of where you carry your fat. People who carry more weight around their waist (an “apple” shape) are at higher risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and premature death than those who carry more weight in their hips (a “pear” shape).
What Is a Healthy Ratio?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a healthy WHR is:
- 0.90 or less for men
- 0.85 or less for women
Ratios higher than 1.0 for men or 0.86 for women indicate an increased risk of health complications.
