8 Tips to Stretch Your Aldi Budget Further
Smart shopping habits that take this plan from good to exceptional value.
Shop on a full stomach
It sounds basic but it works. Hungry shoppers overspend by an average of 17% according to purchasing research. Eat before you go, stick to the list.
Buy frozen vegetables freely
Aldi’s frozen veg range (peas, broccoli, spinach, mixed veg) is nutritionally equal to fresh — often better since it’s frozen immediately after harvest. And it’s far cheaper.
Check the yellow-label section
Aldi marks down short-dated produce significantly. Check the fridge section near closing time for meat and veg you can freeze or use that day at huge discounts.
Embrace batch cooking Sundays
Cook double of every recipe. Soups, curries, bolognese, and casseroles all freeze brilliantly — giving you instant weeknight meals that cost nothing extra.
Make porridge your default breakfast
A 1kg bag of Aldi oats feeds a family for a week at roughly 8p per serving. Add frozen berries or banana for flavour. It’s the single best value breakfast available.
Plan meals around protein on offer
If Aldi has chicken thighs on offer that week, build your meal plan around chicken. Flexibility is the best budgeting tool — don’t be married to a fixed plan.
Use tinned & dried legumes
Chickpeas, lentils, and beans are the best-value protein available. A 400g tin of chickpeas at 50p gives you 4 servings of protein — unbeatable for the price.
Never waste the chicken carcass
After Sunday’s roast, simmer the carcass with veg scraps for 1–2 hours. You’ll have homemade chicken stock that beats any cube — free from the bones you’d otherwise bin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this meal plan suitable for a single person or couple?
Absolutely. Simply halve the shopping quantities. Your weekly bill drops to around £18–20 for a couple or £10–12 for one person. Batch-cook meals like curry and soup freeze perfectly, so nothing goes to waste.
Are all these items available at every Aldi?
The vast majority of items listed are Aldi core range — available in every store, every week. A small number of lines (like specific fish fillets) may vary slightly. Tinned, frozen, and dried goods are always in stock and form the backbone of this plan.
Can this work for someone who doesn’t eat meat?
Yes. Simply swap the meat items for extra legumes, eggs, or Aldi’s plant-based range. Three of the seven dinners are already vegetarian — the chickpea curry, flatbread pizza, and veggie fry-up. Replace bolognese mince with lentils and the sausage casserole with butter beans.
How do I avoid food waste with this plan?
The plan is designed with crossover ingredients — for example, the spinach used in the chickpea curry also appears in the stir-fry. Batch cook soups and curries at the start of the week and freeze half immediately. Use leftover roast chicken in salads or sandwiches the following day.
Is £35 a week realistic for a family of four?
It is — and many Aldi shoppers spend less. The key is sticking to the list, buying Aldi own-brand (which is the same quality as big brands), using the freezer section, and avoiding impulse buys in the middle aisles. Aldi’s structure works in your favour: there are far fewer decisions to make than in a traditional supermarket.
