What Is a Wilks Score?

The Wilks Score is a coefficient used to measure the relative strength of powerlifters. It was created by Robert Wilks, CEO of Powerlifting Australia, to address the fact that lighter lifters can often lift more relative to their body weight than heavier lifters. By applying the Wilks coefficient to a lifter’s total (Squat + Bench + Deadlift), you get a score that levels the playing field.

How to Interpret Your Score

While there is no official “good” score, here are some general benchmarks for competitive powerlifters:

  • 300+: Decent strength for a casual lifter.
  • 350+: Competitive at a local level.
  • 400+: Regional/State level competitor.
  • 500+: Elite national or world-class lifter.
